St Catherine's Oratory

St Catherine's Oratory

This beautiful historic lighthouse building is a wonderful place from which to enjoy views over the South West and South East coast of the Isle of Wight.

Built in medieval times it was used to warn sailors from the dangerous coast around Blackgang Chine and Niton. It is now a popular view point and only a short walk from the car park up above the fun park of Blackgang Chine or, alternatively, there is a footpath from the nearby village of Niton.

Locals more often know St Catherine's Oratory as The Pepper Pot but it has also been compared to a stone space rocket.

St Catherine's Oratory is open all year round and is free to enjoy. It is particularly enjoyable to visit in the evenings from where you can watch the sun set behind Freshwater and the Needles.
